Steals Workshop

Steals is a word used in Modern Jive to describe cutting in on a dance and continuing the dance as if nothing has happened. Follows can be stolen, leads can be stolen - it makes Modern Jive even more interactive and is so much fun!

Join our OMJ teachers and crew to learn how to dance more smoothly, understand momentum and play steals. This will allow us to teach you how to play steals with extra leads or follows on your most popular night dancing.

How Steals Works

There are three people involved but only two dance together at any one time. The spare person steals either the lead or follow role from the dancing couple in a way that doesn't interrupt the flow of the dance.

There maybe a brief connection between all three dancers during a steal but it shouldn't last any longer than required for the transition.

At any one time there is a leader and a follower. Therefore the following scenarios are possible:

  • The spare dancer can steal the lead.
  • The spare dancer can steal the follow.
