Winter Weekender

Workshops, Coaching Sessions

The Winter Weekender is all about growing your dancing in an informative and welcoming learning environment. Our workshops are designed to help you bring the best out of your dancing and develop new and existing skills.

This year we're offering more! More workshops, more coaching, more discussion.

All workshops and coaching sessions are being held at Silhouette Studios, Burnside.

Friday Evening

7pm - 8pm Double Shot

with guest teachers Hannah & Ryan

Welcome to the Winter Weeekender! Let's kick off the weekend with an all-level pre-party workshop that's a little bit playful, a little bit sassy, and a whole lot of fun. We have something special planned but you'll have to be there to find out!

Saturday

10:00am - 11:00am Like a River

with Hazel & Thomas S

In this worksop, you will work with your partners to build momentum and use it to generate movements. We will also explore the different ways we can make energy flow through the body, to dance like a gently flowing stream or a raging river.

11:15am - 12:15pm Skip a Beat

with guest teachers Hannah & Ryan

1 & 2 & skip a few, then 7 & 8? What happens if we cut a step here, and maybe a couple over there? We know how to add beats in and draw out a movement, so let's work on cutting a beat out while keeping our partner on their feet! In this workshop we will explore timing variations and how you can change your moves just by varying the amount of time it takes to complete them.

NOTE: This workshop is for advanced dancers (who would compete at advanced / Level 3 and above). An audition process will be available for special circumstances, please reach out if you would like to know more about this process.

11:15am - 12:15pm Breaking Good

with Deb & Thomas G

This beginner / intermediate friendly workshop is designed to introduce you to the core ingredients of great Modern Jive. Take the good basics you know, break them down and leverage the pieces to create a more interesting and dynamic dance for you and your partner.

1:15pm - 2:15pm Enhance Your Dance!

with Alice & Nathan

Join Alice and Nathan on a journey to discover your unique style. This workshop will help you understand where and how to add styling without disrupting the flow of the dance.

1:15pm - 2:15pm Critique Session

with Brie & James

A chance to gather one on one advice from two of New Zealand's Level 4 dancers. Particpants will be asked to dance in front of the group and will received individualised feedback on certain topics and skills.

Dancers are able to chose whether their feedback is on a specific topic or based on our coach's observations.

2:30pm - 3:30pm Dynamic Duo

with Zoe & James

Experiment with the concept of bringing 'dynamics' to your dance. Learn to manipulate height, direction and speed to create whole new moves, and better express what your hear in the music.

4:00pm - 5:00pm TAD (Talk About Dance)

Q&A panel with top dancers

Got any burning questions about dance? Want some further clarification on a point that was discussed in an earlier workshop? Never fear! Our Q&A session is back by popular request!

Complete the TAD Google form online or drop your question into the designated basket at the venue. Questions may be for a specific crew member or the general team and can be anonymous or named.
