Modern Jive Timing

Modern Jive is usually danced to music with a 4/4 time signature - nearly all pop music has this time signature which is also known as common time. Each unit or bar of music contains four beats and at beginner level we step on each beat.

In the improvers review after the beginner class we introduce our recommended foot work:

  • Leads step back first on the right foot
  • Follows step back first on the left foot

We take our first step on the & and our second step on the number.

  • Leads step with their left foot on the numbers
  • Follows step with their right foot on the numbers

Upbeats & Downbeats

The last beat of a bar is defined as an upbeat which makes the first beat of a bar a downbeat.

  • Up Beat   upbeats correspond to the &'s
  • Down Beat   downbeats correspond to the numbers

You can dance perfectly in time without being aware of upbeats and downbeats.

As we get more advanced we can change our footwork by taking out or adding steps so long as we are aware of the underlying timing.
